“Well this looks interesting,” Todd said to his two friends as they stood at the opening in the old castle wall that seemed to lead down a set of stone steps to an underground tunnel or chamber. “Who’s ready to follow me down those steps and explore whatever is down there?”

“Are you sure it’s safe to go down there?” Mary asked.

“I agree,” Brad said, “it looks a little sketchy to me.”

Climbing a mighty spiral staircase is a great feat of endurance. It requires a mastery of fear, good stamina and a desire to see what awaits at the top. The view will either astonish or leave you bitter with disappointment. What if you are forced to climb by some unknown force?

Find the oldest spiral staircase in the city and climb it by 11 AM. I’ll be waiting at the top. Disappoint me your peril’

Dalian had woken up to his phone beeping. He read that text message seven times with a growing coldness in his chest. The sender was unknown and yet the message struck a fearful note. Not in the least because it was already 9:45 AM.

‘What if I don’t feel like playing games?’ he texted back.

The I-phone immediately beeped the new message.

Dalian looked and almost dropped his phone. There on-screen was an image of Kerry his girlfriend. She was duct-taped to a swivel chair and gagged.

The line lingered but a second before coming to rest on the water and gently stretched downstream.
He watched in fascination, no two casts the same, but the peace and tranquility of the moment, the gentle pull of the current, the reflected line in the water, calmed him.
No matter there were no fish.

Sitting quietly reflecting on life
The fisherman escapes his strife.
Here he can, to himself be true.
Trees and sky reverse the view

Fishing was a patient pastime.

Casting the line and then waiting for however long it took for the fish to take the bait.

Josh sat there and as he waited, his mind went back many years, when his father showed him how to cast a line for the first time.

I came to the top of the little bluff and froze for a second before instinct kicked in.  Had I been seen?  I allowed myself a quick peak at the fisherman.  He was concentrating on his fly and hadn’t turned my direction, not even flinched. I was sure I hadn’t been noticed.

It had been months since there had been any pursuit.  Even the dogs were worthless when I didn’t want to be found.

The light inside was green, as it filtered through the branches of the surrounding trees. He leaned against one of the tree stems and breathed deeply. He was safe at last.

There was no sound of his pursuers and all was quiet. He put his hand in his pocket and drew out the bounty. A man’s wallet bulging with cash!
