On this day… 27th May, 1915 – Herman Wouk born – 100th Birthday!!

Herman Wouk (born May 27, 1915) is a Pulitzer Prize-winning American author who has been a published author for nearly 70 years. His novels include The Caine Mutiny, The Winds of War and War and Remembrance.

On Writing

Wouk was a participant in the most terrible war in human history, and he wanted to record what had happened and why it had to be done. To achieve that end, Wouk fused fiction with history. Herman WoukThis was received in many ways sometimes hugely successful (his character sketch of Franklin Roosevelt—even better as rendered in FDR’s Groton accent in the audiobook superbly performed by Kevin Pariseau), and sometimes not (the interpolation of an imaginary history of the war by a fictitious German general).

Wouk plans to release a book for his 100th birthday. Wouk’s “Sailor and Fiddler: Reflections of a 100-Year-Old Author” is coming out in December, Simon & Schuster told The Associated Press on Friday. The book will cover his years in the Navy during World War II, inspiration for his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel “The Caine Mutiny,” and will include reflections on his Jewish faith, a recurring theme in his work.
