My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This is a fantastic story full of complicated and intriguing characters that entice you in from the first page and capture the readers’ imagination quickly. Lauren the main protagonist is forced to marry an old man from the English colonies who doesn’t speak French. She is rescued from that marriage before it’s begun by a hurricane that sweeps her away on her wedding day to another life. Through a series of incidents she has to leave her new life and ends up in New England, where she joins with con artists who use her as bait to lure aristocrats into business ventures. After further uncontrollable events Lauren ends up part of a smuggling scheme.
This story is all about survival, and the multitude of situations Lauren gets herself into and out of makes for an exciting adventure. The development of the character from naïve convent girl to independent smuggler keeps the reader reading throughout. There is a lot of detail in this book but that didn’t detract anything for me and I found Hughes writing style very easy to read.
An excellent combo of adventures rolled into one, with a strong female character.
